Geek: Web Design

This may be a bit of a surprise but I'm actually on version 7 of this template! Of course, they have mostly been small tweaks apart from the change in logo.

I started with about 350 lines of code and I'm currently almost at 570 lines. It may be pointless but well, I have taken interest in it again, so it's kind of a hobby for me right now. I used to design my own templates couple years ago, until I got bored of it. Mainly due to the complexity of coding required to achieve fancy looks and transitions.

However, thanks to the arrival of CSS 3.0 and HTML 5, all the crazy scripting has mostly disappeared. And are welcomed by the concise CSS codes instead. I am rather proud to say that everything here is still done using only code! Because I'm still new to this new era, I had to do a lot, and I do mean, a lot of searching And I would love to point out the improvements made, not going by versions.

First, hover transitions. where there's a smooth animation for all the links. Where I painstakingly customized for so many things. So many...

Second, the navigation bar has seen much change. from colors to better highlights, borders and stuffs. Font change and better area targeting, so you don't have to aim for the word to access the link. And I added that little triangle today, just for kicks.

Third, the background is fully coded. It took quite some time to figure it out. And they are not random words. It's mainly for my ego and self-satisfaction.

Fourth, blockquote and image caption gained background styling. Post gained minimum border styling. And search.

Fifth, Legibility. I've switched fonts and changed rendering to make everything more readable. The logo has careful kerning and little geometric distortion.

That's more or less about it! The rest are just minor changes and tweaks to the color design. I must say that I am loving the design and this is probably the best one I've done yet. This is pretty much for my own entertainment, so one day there might be random things flying around with crazy transitions.

I am stuck at version 8 where I'm trying to add some dynamic flare to images. To hover and have the image darken with the word "Enlarge", where you can click on it and it'll pop up in a higher resolution, with the background darkened. It's... rather difficult and I've been searching non-stop for an elegant solution.

If there's anyone who is willing to give me a solution, I'll be overjoyed. Unfortunately, I have zero, I swear to god, zero friends who does these kind of things. Contrary to popular beliefs, I probably need more online friends than real life friends.

Well, this was certainly a shitty way to celebrate the end of an exam period. But heck, tomorrow is going to be better, and Saturday is going to be legendary. Seriously, wait for Saturday.
